The unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – available on Netflix March 6th

On Wednesday, the lovely people at Netflix invited me to London along with a whole lot of other mums (and a couple of dads) to spend some metime, getting pampered (massage! cocktails! chocolate brownies!), and also have the chance to see the first episodes of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt before it’s available to stream on March 6th. (Which is now, but I’m not sure what *time* it goes live. ETA 12.01 PST. Which is 8pm. (Or was it 8am? Who knows) So I’d better go get some sleep first 😉 )

A rather better picture of the rather lovely cocktails. (I had 3! hic.)

The show’s premise is unusual – Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) is one of the Mole Women – 4 women kept underground for 15 years by a madman who persuaded them that the world had ended. Set free from the bunker, she decides she’s going to start over in New York City. Obviously.

And yes, it’s a comedy. But it’s a comedy with layers. Written by Tina Fey of 30 Rock fame, it’s very very sharp, and absolutely packed with witty exchanges.

Kimmy gets herself into all sorts of odd scrapes, not surprisingly, given the 15 years of catch up she’s got to do (look out for the book of things no one says any more), but she’s unbreakable, in a somewhat dented and damaged way, and also in an aw sort of way. Lots of comedy feels mean to me, like people are being laughed at rather than with – this doesn’t feel like that. And a lot of what she says makes a lot of sense. “You can do anything for just 10 seconds” really hit home, I like my comedy surreal but with a strong layer of observational truth.

We got to watch 3 episodes – they’re short (22 minutes), and there’s only 13 I think. Must not binge on entire series in one night. Or even one weekend.

I understand it’s been optioned for another series though (I really hope it’s already been optioned for another series) so there’s something to look forward to.

It’s a shame that the rather lovely cocktails from the premiere event won’t show up at my house for the next episodes (although I did get chocolates in my goody bag, so at least that’s some consolation) but I’ll somehow make do without them. And you can catch up with Kimmy on Twitter as well :)

When you take a look, let me know what you think? Personally I’m taking notes on Kimmy’s teen handling tips 😉
